Biography
Jakov Solodki is known in the world of the European jazz, as percussionist with passion to the Cuban and Latin-American music. During his life Jakov Solodki was playing on before fans and experts on a Latin Jazz and musical critics at many prestigious jazz festivals in USA (Newport), in Finland (Das Tampere Jazz Happening), Brazil, Israel, Germany, Sweden, Russia, Bulgarian, in different bands and in different years, taking a part in concerts with such giants of a jazz, as Dave Brubeck, Woody Shaw, Joe Pass, Sal Nistico, David Backer, Willie Martinez.
Jakov Solodki was researching of a heritage of great masters percussion, such as Mongo Santamaria, Ray Barretto, Carlos „Patato“ Valdez, Poncho Sanchez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Jose Luis Quintana „Changuito“, and has completely formed a spectrum of technical possibilities, and as result he created individual language of the playing which he developed for many years by individual work and cooperation with different musicians. The obvious talent and expressiveness of solo play of Jakov Solodki during his musical career lies in the field of a Latin jazz where without percussion this music would look as ridiculously, as a glass eye, instead of real eye, in photos of the Hollywood movie star...
Jakov Solodki was born in Ukraine in April, 1954, in a family loving parents with which always were contact and understanding. In 1983 Jakov Solodki has finished „College of Jazz Music“in the city of Saratov in the class of the excellent teacher, the pianist and the arranger, Boris Zolotaryov. The brightest event of student's years was a concert with Nik Levinovsky and Alexander Fisher’s participation ("Allegro") with which Jakov Solodki have friendship till now.
Since 1985 to 1993 Jakov Solodki works in one of the best jazz ensembles in Russia under the direction of the National actor of Russia - David Goloschokin. After that he was in a tour and recorded a few compact discs with the leader of the Russian rock group "DDT", Yury Shevchuk. In 1995 Jakov Solodki recorded first Latin Jazz album in Russia called "Percussion Magic". The musical review was written by the authoritative musicologist Vladimir Feyertag and this album got highly rating by musical critics of American magazine „Percussive Notes“ (Terry O’Mahony), and also one of leading drum-type magazines “Latin Beat Review“.
Since May, 1995 Jakov Solodki lives in Germany, in Munich (München). He is musical director and the band leader „Latin Visit“, which got a lot of the international prizes for participation in prestigious jazz festivals Barcelona-Spain (Spain 2002) and Szeged Jazz Festival (Hungary) 2004.
Over last 5th years Jakov Solodki was played and made records in USA with musicians, famous in Jazz world: Max Shweiger, Tom Vilariny, Misha Tsiganov, John Sanchez, Jennifer Vincent, Lizy Sible, and Willie Martinez.
In 2009 Jakov Solodki has been finished album "No Secret" in which jazz standards has been played in Latin style. In record of this album took part a lot of masters of the European jazz scene – Ulrich Wangenheim, David Gazarov, Arno Haselsteiner, Klaus Reichstaller, Jan Eschke, Сarlo Mombelli, Manolo Diaz, Victor Alcantara, Hugo Siegmeth, Maurizio Diaz, Ramon Plaza. Release is planned in the end of year (2010) on a label "ENJA"
Now Jakov Solodki planning several percussion master-classes in St.-Petersburg and other cities of Russia, and tour with participation of musicians from the different countries.
